Roberto Alagna’s marriage to Angela Gheorghiu was tumultuous at best. They were headed for divorce in 2009 and were back together by 2011. In 2013, however, the marriage ended for good, or bad.
Divorce finalized by July 2013
They met in 1994 on stage performing La Bohème at the Royal Opera House. Angela left her first husband for him, but she and Roberto only became a couple after his first wife died because of a brain tumour.
They were married in 1996 and became a rather infamous couple right away. They appeared on stage together, where everything is about drama. But they were also well known for their personal antics off stage, especially Angela, who apparently owns no watch or clock to ever be on time.
She earned and deserved her reputation as a diva, but Roberto had a reputation for having a temper. Angela said after their divorce that she had been warned about his temper, but love makes blind and she was blindly in love, not heeding or even hearing any warnings.
It’s been said that Roberto was especially jealous of her male partners on stage. Though there never seemed to have been a reason for that jealousy. And Angela was not inclined to accept his jealousy anyway, continuing to sing with other men.
In 2009 then the couple announced their divorce for the first time. Nobody seemed to have been surprised, but it also seemed to be the end of an era.
In order to avoid any confrontation, the Royal Opera House apparently tweaked their schedules to keep the couple apart.
However, the two reconciled. How and when is not entirely clear, but by 2011 the two were back together. They even had a reprisal of their La Bohème performance, which was a reminder of how they first met.
Angela said then that they never should have parted to begin with and that it had been a stupid idea. They announced that they were in a happy place and that was that.
But in January 2013 they once more announced that they were separating and heading for a mutual divorce. Angela dramatically said that she had done everything until the very last moment, but that there came a point that she could not longer accept it. She didn’t specify what she meant by ‘everything’ or what she was no longer able to accept.
Later she claimed that Roberto had been violent and abusive. And whilst some were inclined to believe her, many were sceptical given her penchant for drama. To this day we don’t really know what the truth was as no formal charges were ever brought up. Angela didn’t seem to want to pursue the matter and Roberto never really seemed to deny the accusations.
Both have since been seeing other people and prefer not to talk about the other. Perhaps they should have divorced the first time around, but hindsight is always 20/20.
