Three times married, Kim Kardashian’s second divorce from Kris Humphries was one of the most talked about celebrity divorces in recent years. Her marriage to husband number three, Kanye West, is just as much talked about, including speculation that they might be headed for a divorce soon.
The divorce was legally finalized on June 3, 2013

Married three times
Few know that Kim Kardashian’s current marriage to Kanye West is actually her third. At just 34 she seems rather young to have been married three times. But she started early at just 19 and was married to music producer Damon Thomas for a total of four years. Although it was Thomas who filed for divorce, Kardashian later claimed that she had been emotionally and physically abused by her husband. The two had been married in 2000 when they actually eloped and were divorced three years later.
It is mostly her second marriage to Kris Humphries that is the subject of this article; or rather, the divorce.
Kim and Kris – a whirlwind romance
They dated for approximately six months before Kris Humphries popped the question to Kim, which was filmed as part of the Kardashian reality TV show. Then they were married in a fairy-tale wedding after just 90 days of being engaged. The wedding ended up being filmed as a special two-part TV feature as Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event. It reportedly cost $10 million, but supposedly earned $18 million.
Naturally, the Kardashian family is steadfast in their claims that money was never an issue in this particular relationship. However, many media outlets speculated whether the marriage and especially the wedding might have been a sham in order to score higher ratings. If so, it certainly worked.
Trouble in paradise
Reports of trouble among the newlyweds emerged fairly soon into their short-lived marriage. One of the main problems seemed to have been the couple’s living arrangements. Kris Humphries split his time between Miami and Minnesota, whilst Kim lived in L.A. Both driven by their careers, they simply lived where their work required them to live.
Only during their time together in New York did they truly live together, but that was before their marriage when Kim still filmed Kourtney & Kim Take New York with her older sister. It appears that Kim and Kris spent so little time together that her family never really got to know her husband.
It was a shock, but oddly not much of a surprise, when Kim filed for divorce 72 days after the wedding citing irreconcilable differences and giving their separation date as the same day, October 31, 2011. Apparently, Kris Humphries was just as shocked as everyone else. Devastated by the news, he did say that he would do whatever it would take to make it work. But he never stood a chance. It does not appear as if Kim ever even considered reconciliation.
A fraudulent marriage?
On December 1st Kris Humphries finally filed his response to Kim’s divorce papers, seeking an annulment from her and claiming that their marriage was a fraud, staged to boost the ratings of her shows. That claim was indirectly supported by Jonathan Jaxson, although Kim sued him for $200k in damages for defamation in response.
Kim Kardashian vehemently denied that she married for anything but love and has been supported throughout the ordeal by her mother Kris Jenner and her sisters.
Eventually, the fight was taken up by the lawyers of each party throughout 2012.
Surprisingly the ex-couple continued to live relatively normal lives. Kris Humphries devoted his time to his NBA career and Kim fell in love with Kanye West, continuing her career as successful as always.
Pregnant from Kanye West
At the end of December 2012, Kanye West announced Kim’s pregnancy during one of his concerts, which was closely followed by a motion filed by Kim’s lawyers to finally set a trial date for her divorce from Kris Humphries. The reason for the sudden urgency was simple enough: she didn’t want to be married to a man that was not the father of her baby. But Humphries continued to stall.
Only in February 2013 was a trial date finally set for May 6th.
In the end, it didn’t even come to a trial. On April 19th, exactly 536 days after Kim initially filed for divorce, she and Kris settled outside of court. Apparently, Kris did not receive any money (though he initially filed for $7 million) and both agreed to pay their own legal fees.
It was Kris who pulled the plug on the legal battle. He claimed shortly thereafter that he simply felt sorry for Kim, especially since she was pregnant and clearly under a lot of stress. It’s also quite possible that he didn’t have much of a case with his fraud claims and therefore little chance of winning. It was easier to cut his losses at this time.
Whilst all of this is now a part of the past, things never really seem to settle down for Kim. She has been married to Kanye West since May 2014, is the mother of three children by now (let’s not get into the children’s names, though), and the whole affair didn’t affect her popularity in the long run.
But the couple continues to be haunted by divorce rumours. This is not a recent occurrence either. Instead, they keep coming back in various iterations. Whilst all rumours have been debunked eventually, it should be worrying that they keep coming back regardless.
It’s usually Kanye’s antics that result in the latest divorce rumours. Whenever he is in the gossip columns again with another outrageous rant, reports of Kim having had finally enough follow quickly.
Still, the couple is still married, though nobody can possibly say how happy the two are. When Kim posts pictures of herself and her three children, she looks overjoyed. But many other pictures show her withdrawn, stressed or annoyed. Happy pictures of Kim and Kanye have become a rarity.
Kim is 37 now and already in her third marriage. Whatever one might think of her personally, let’s hope she doesn’t have to go through another divorce.
