Olivier Martinez and Halle Berry were together for 5 years before their relationship fell apart. More than a year after filing, the divorce has only now been finalized.
Divorce finalized in December 2016
Olivier Martinez and Halle Berry met on the set for their film Dark Tide in 2010. The movie had barely made it to theatres when it emerged that the two were engaged in March 2012. At the time Halle was also involved in a custody battle over her daughter with ex Gabriel Aubry. The main reason behind the custody case was Halle’s desire to move to France with Olivier and her daughter, which Gabriel was adamantly against.
Ultimately they resolved their issues and no one left the country, but not before Olivier and Gabriel ended up butting heads, quite literally, causing a lot of public embarrassment not only for each other but for Halle as well.
It turned out that Olivier had quite the temper and tended towards violence as well. Halle was never on the receiving end of that, however, and so the two married in July 2013. Their son Maceo was born three months later.
Olivier made it into the news a few times in the following years, always for some outburst or another. Halle was reportedly furious and eventually filed for divorce in October 2015. Olivier followed close behind with his own divorce filing. So-called sources blamed her high maintenance status and his volatile behaviour as the main driver behind the divorce. Their relationship was called passionate, but tempestuous seems to be an appropriate term as well.
Despite their differences, however, they remained dedicated co-parents to both Nahla and Maceo. Neither made an attempt to move on either and they haven’t been seen out dating anyone else. For a while everything was reasonably quiet around the estranged couple.
Some even speculated that they might be getting back together, but that seemed doubtful. Unless Olivier would change his ways, Halle was not likely to take him back. At the same time it has been said that she didn’t want to be a thrice-divorced mother of two at the age of 50. Olivier was reportedly not too keen on a divorce either, hoping that they could work things out.
Whether or not any specific moves were made toward reconciliation is not known. Whenever Halle and Olivier were seen out and about it was with their children. The divorce proceedings seemed to have halted and in September last year it was reported that both had received notifications from court to either move forward or to have the case dismissed.
Whilst no official news emerged, either way, in December 2016 it was announced that the divorce had been finalized. Well, at the very least the custody agreement had been finalized. The estranged couple would retain shared legal and physical custody of their son, which is just about all we know. Financial aspects of the divorce don’t seem to have been discussed. Instead we know a prenup exists and it seems quite likely that it will be honoured.
We do also know that Olivier conceded to Halle the filing as the petitioner of the divorce. Both had initially filed as petitioner, but only one party is actually allowed to do so. The petitioner is the person who left the other party and this means now that Halle is officially the one who left Olivier and not the other way around.
Whether or not the divorce is for the better remains to be seen. Some have said that perhaps the two are better as friends and they seem to be getting along quite well. The divorce has been entirely amicable as far as anyone can say, which is certainly a better case scenario than Halle has experienced in the past.
