Chip and Joanna Gaines will be married 15 years this year. Their story is by now widely known and the couple is much loved. But with their many ventures their relationship has come under strain, which is why Fixer Upper will end – for now – in order for them to regroup and strengthen their marriage.

Made for each other
It may very well be a cliché, but Chip and Joanna Gaines may very well have been made for each other. The beginning of their romance doesn’t necessarily suggest as much, but listen closely and you’ll see.
Chip first met Joanna in 2001. She was working at her father’s store and he recognised her from commercials for the store that she’s been in. They got talking one day and just one day later he called and asked her out on a date. She accepted.
When they had their date, however, he showed up late. She claims that it was an hour and a half. He maintains it was only 20 minutes. Either way, he was late. Under the hat he wore he had a fresh buzz cut as well as a red, weathered face, essentially not at all looking like his usual handsome self. Joanna was unsure what this guy was all about and if he really was the same man she had had such a lovely chat with the first time around.
It turned out that he had shaved his head in order to support a friend, who was battling cancer. In other words, he’s one of the good ones. Their date went very well. But their next date had to be cancelled, because Joanna had to go into hospital for a surgery. Apparently Chip neither called nor sent flowers, claiming that it would have been a strange move after only one date.
But they did end up having a second date at a basketball game and they’ve been together ever since. He was the first to say the three magic words, to which she merely replied with a ‘thank you’. Only when he tried again two weeks later did she reply in kind. Not everyone is ready to say such things at the same time.
Chip and Joanna married in 2003.
Then she joined him in his house flipping business and together they also opened their first store, Magnolia Market. Over the next few years they expanded their business and their family, bringing four children into this world together.
Becoming famous with Fixer Upper
It was 2012 when a TV producer contacted Joanna to ask her whether she would be interested in filming a home renovation show. She had noticed Joanna’s blog online and liked it. Chip considered it a scam, but Joanna called back regardless.
From the pilot episode, where Chip and Joanna transformed an uninhabitable hoarder den into a stunning new home, the show was a hit. They were almost instantly renewed for five seasons and everyone just loved the Gainses.
Sure, the show was edited, but the two were never scripted. Chip became the loveable, kind guy, known for his dad jokes, and Joanna is the ambitious interior designer, who is always clear-headed and keeps her two feet firmly on the ground. She is the sterner of the two, granted, but their dynamic works really well and the two are an authentic couple.
Very much against their own plans the two soon became local celebrities and famous far beyond the borders of Waco, Texas. In fact, Waco has seen quite the increase of visitors and new residents, likely owed just to Fixer Upper and its popularity.
Chip and Joanna continued to expand their businesses on all fronts, all the while trying to shield their children as much as possible from public scrutiny.
But fame always comes at a price and eventually that included unpleasant and repeated rumours about the state of their marriage.
In the second half of 2017 the first rumours about trouble in paradise appeared. Divorce rumours made the rounds and eventually Chip and Joanna were asked about it in an interview. Both had heard the rumours and were rather baffled by their appearance. The two had no idea how such rumours could come about and assured their fans that any such gossip is merely a scam.
The two appeared to be very much in love and have repeatedly said that their relationship is stronger than ever.
Of course, from their show we know that the two don’t always agree on everything. They fight. They swear. They stumble every once in a while and Joanna does get exasperated with Chip. There’s little doubt that the two love each other and that they are imperfect. But divorce? Surely not!
Retiring Fixer Upper
And yet, a few months down the line Chip admitted that there might be some “credence” to those rumours after all. Indeed, Chip and Joanna Gaines confirmed late last year that the fifth season of Fixer Upper would also be its last. At least for the time being.
The two very much have a full plate with all their ventures and the constant filming of their show has been putting a strain on their marriage and family. Chip admitted that he doesn’t want to push the envelope any further than he already has. Whilst their relationship continues to be a healthy one, as everyone in their inner circle is well aware of, they do feel the need to take a step back.
They want to protect their family, which includes taking themselves off air. The two have plenty of ventures to continue working on and really don’t need cameras following them around 11 months of the year.
That doesn’t mean Fixer Upper may not be back. At the end of the day even the strongest couple can only take on so much before the strain begins to show. And they do have four young children to raise still. At some point they have to prioritize a little more. Considering that their kids will all enter puberty eventually, the children shouldn’t be the ones getting the least attention with everything else the couple has going on.
For now any divorce rumours for the two can be considered false. We reckon they are doing the right thing by taking a step back and putting more emphasis on their family. That way there will never be any more substance to the rumours than there is now.
