Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor have been married for 17 years. After being together for 18 years the two announced their amicable divorce. Whilst gossip is plenty, nobody really knows why the two split. And since the divorce was announced, all has been quiet around the estranged couple.

17 years of marriage
Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor met in 1999 on the set of a TV show that never made it to the screen. When Ben first saw Christine he thought “That’s the person”. She was the one. He fell in love and wanted to be with her.
And clearly, the sentiment was mutual, because the two married in May 2000, only about a year later. He had proposed to her in November 1999, a whole six months before that, obviously quite certain that she would say yes and that she really was the one.
For the longest time, everyone agreed that the two were not only perfect for each other but that they were among the most stable and enduring couples in Hollywood.
The couple welcomed two children into the world. First a girl in 2002 and then a boy in 2006. Whilst Ben and Christine kept their marriage fairly private, they always showed up on the red carpet together and they starred in a number of movies together. Among them the two Zoolander movies and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Tropic Thunder as well as Arrested Development.
In an interview in 2015, Ben said that life tended to throw all kinds of things at you and that it was important to keep a good humour and laugh. Apparently, that’s true for a marriage as well and good humour was important in his marriage to Christine.
Announcing the divorce
But eventually the laughter ended and Ben and Christine could no longer keep up appearances. In May 2017, practically following their 17-year anniversary, the two announced that they would divorce.
Their joint statement said: “With tremendous love and respect for each other, and the 18 years we spent together as a couple, we have made the decision to separate. Our priority will continue to be raising our children as devoted parents and the closest of friends. We kindly ask that the media respect our privacy at this time.”
Everybody was quite shocked at this announcement because nobody seems to have seen it coming. Unless you were looking closer. Rumours were there.
A plethora of reasons?
Depending who you ask, you’ll be hearing a number of different reasons as to why Ben and Christine decided to divorce. Here are some rumours that we’ve encountered. Whether they are credible or not is another question, however.
Among the older rumours that one can hear is the one that Ben Stiller is not as pleasant to work with as it may seem. He is a comedian and exudes a certain boyish charm, but it’s been said about him that he can be extremely difficult on set. Considering that Christine worked with him as well, it may have put a strain on their marriage if the working relationship was made difficult by him.
Then again, why would she continue to star beside him, if he really is insufferable? Not the most credible rumour.
There’s also been some gossip about Ben having met a younger actress on the set of one of his movies and he was reportedly quite smitten with her. Christine, in an apparent fit of jealousy, forbade him to ever speak to her again, to which he, of course, told her to leave him be. After all, he can speak to and spend time with whomever he wishes.
Once more it has to be noted that there is little credibility to this rumour. The actress in question is never named and remains utterly faceless, which makes it difficult to even pinpoint who Ben might have been smitten with. The website Gossip Cop makes it one of its aims to investigate rumours such as this one and found it without merit.
Lastly, there was a rumour that Ben had turned into a paranoid hypochondriac ever since he has first been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014. He received an early diagnosis and the tumour was successfully removed. Ben only spoke about it long after the fact. Later it’s been said that this health scare has turned him into a hypochondriac, which has been driving everyone, but especially Christine, up the wall.
Other rumours have made the rounds on top of the ones we’ve mentioned here. Though few seem to have any real merit.
The most credible reason we did find as to why the previously so happy couple decided to part ways is not unusual at all. Their priorities shifted. Ben is a busy actor, still making plenty of movies and working on other projects. But Christine’s priority has shifted towards raising their children. Sure, she still appears in movies here and there, but she’s not had major projects for some time. It seems Ben and Christine may simply have drifted apart and realised that they want different things in life.
All quiet on the divorce front
We actually don’t know how things are going between the estranged couple. Ben has been seen out an about at various red carpet events, but Christine was not by his side, which is hardly surprising. So, whilst all seems to be utterly quiet on the divorce front, we have no reason to assume that the two may have reconciled.
We also have no reason to assume that the divorce has been finalized. After 17 years together a lot of details have to be figured out. Whilst the announcement was certainly amicable, Ben is a very successful actor and there is a lot of money involved in this split. Division of property is never easy. And the two purportedly remain committed co-parents.
Obviously, neither of them have been seen out dating other people either. Eventually they will be moving on, but for now, that doesn’t seem a priority. Hopefully, the divorce is as quiet and amicable as it appears to be.
