The once golden couple now try to peacefully move on from a divorce that surprised many. There is no real proof that either party strayed although Melanie’s unhappiness with her career status could be a reason.
While it is true nothing lasts always and forever, the seemingly fairy tale marriage between Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas lasted an exceptionally long time, especially according to Hollywood’s matrimonial standards. Tinsel Town’s golden couple recently called it quits after 18 years of marriage. Griffith, 57, filed for divorce from Banderas, 54, in Los Angeles Superior Court in June of 2014 citing irreconcilable differences.
In a joint statement released by their representative, the couple said, “We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together – Melanie & Antonio.”
Ironically, the “Working Girl” actress hinted at trouble in paradise when she posted a tweet on May 2: “Who believes in marriage and why? Or why not?” These days, Griffith can be spotted tooling around the Los Angeles area with the couple’s 18-year-old daughter, Stella. These days, there is another important part to the relationship ending process and that is the removal or at least cover-up certain tattoos. No longer smitten, Griffith quickly placed a band aide and makeup over her arm to cover up the heart-shaped ink at a recent red carpet event. Onlookers will no longer be able to see the name “Antonio” inscribed on her forcep.
Meanwhile, Banderas was reportedly seen in Saint Tropez, France dancing the night away with a blonde statuesque Dutch investment consultant named Nicole Kempel. However, clear signs of the “Assassins” actor having moved on did not stop with one night of dancing. Numerous photographs of Banderas and Kempel are plastered all over the internet via various media outlets. Several people even claim to have witnessed the pair holding hands months after the handsome Spanish actor’s separation from his wife. In light of shooting down rumors of Banderas being unfaithful to his wife, there are adamant objections to Kempel being the reason behind the dissolution of his marriage.
One source claims Griffith and Banderas had been separated for months before making their announcement and added that there were major problems due to their conflicting schedules. The friend added that “Griffith was always there to support him, but in recent years she has been tired of being his plus one and wanted to do more before she retired.”
Also, the wedding band may not be the only thing “The Mask of Zorro” star is shedding. Following his split from Griffith, there are several murmurings of Banderas’ plans to quit Hollywood in an effort to make more movies in his native Spain.
Once married to Showtime’s “Ray Donovan” star Steve Bauer and twice to “Miami Vice’s” Don Johnson, this will be Griffith’s fourth divorce and a second divorce for Banderas. The actor and his first wife, Ana Leza, separated after he began a relationship with Griffith in 1995 while shooting the movie “Two Much.”
Banderas married Griffith on May 14, 1996, one month after his divorce from Leza. Griffith is seeking spousal support. The big question remains as to how the soon-to-be-exes will divvy up their portfolio of real estate holdings. The two own properties in Spain, Manhattan, Aspen and Los Angeles. In fact, he told reporters at the recently held San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain, “I’m looking to come home and make movies here.
Hollywood has ceased to exist as such, and now it is just a brand. I might have that brand on me my whole life, but I want to do more films from my own country. I recognize the talent here and I really believe in my people. It’s true that in Hollywood, I’ve always had certain limitations because of my accent or ethnicity. I go straight into certain roles. I’ve been working in Hollywood for 23 years with a certain handicap.”
