It’s no secret that celebrities have a harder time staying married. The constant scrutiny, a lack of privacy and sometimes too many temptations of various kinds are often taking their toll, not to mention work schedules that don’t agree and the difficulty to keep up a normal family life. But when two celebrities stay married for less than six months, the question is why they ever bothered to get married to begin with.
Let’s have a look at the 15 couples that didn’t even stay together for six months.
#15 – Drew Barrymore and Tom Green – 163 days
They never seemed to be the likeliest couple to begin with, but they were engaged for a year in 2000, teasing everyone about the impending nuptials and keeping their fans guessing on the wedding date. Once they had taken the vows, however, wedded bliss did not last and the couple divorced after only 5 months.
#14 – Shannen Doherty and Ashley Hamilton – 5 months
Given that this was a rather spur of the moment wedding in September 1993 when Shannen was 22 and Ashley only 19 years old, it can hardly be a surprise that it didn’t last. Apparently the couple had been together for two weeks before they all but eloped, exchanging vows in front of stunned friends, without parents and everyone bringing their own booze. By February 1994 the romance was over.
#13 – Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock – 122 days
Also a bit of an odd couple, though with Pamela’s penchant for rockers perhaps not too surprising. On and off together between 2001 to 2003, they somehow rekindled their relationship in 2006 and married a few weeks later on a yacht in St. Tropez, Pamela wearing a white bikini and little else. Less than four months later Kid and Pam very much raced each other to the court house to file for divorce, Kid made it 53 minutes ahead of Pam.
#12 – Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley – 107 days
One reason for these short marriages seems to be the fact that the couples in question really don’t have much in common and one wonders what ever brought them together. Point in case: Nick Cage and Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of one and the same Elvis Presley. They met in 2000 and after an on and off romance they decided to marry in Hawaii in a sumptuous ceremony. Three and a half months later it was Cage who asked for divorce and very aptly declared that they shouldn’t have been married to begin with. This turned out to be Presley’s third divorce, by the way.
#11 – Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian – 72 days
Certainly one of the most infamous quickie divorces on this list is that of Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian. Their wedding cost reportedly millions and was filmed for a TV special that lasted four hours. Only 72 days later everything was over and especially Kris had to defend allegations that the whole thing had been staged for TV.
#10 – Pamela Anderson and Rick Salomon – 60 days
Yes, here she is again, Pamela Anderson. Her marriage to Rick Salomon, who was not only married to Shannen Doherty prior to this marriage, but is also the guy of Paris Hilton sex tape fame, lasted two months at the end of 2007. Their second marriage (yes, there was a second one!), in 2014, lasted a little longer and was only divorced in April 2015.
#9 – Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine – 32 days
When these two got married in 1964 they had already each been divorced twice. The reason for their divorce? During their honeymoon Ethel was jealous that Ernest had more fans pining over him than she did. By the time they came home it was apparently “hell on earth” for Ernest and the marriage was over quickly.
#8 – Jeremy Thomas and Drew Barrymore – 19 days
Another one who features twice in this list. Granted, Drew was only 19 years old at the time and this was a rather unplanned wedding. So unexpected, in fact, that her co-stars on Bad Girls at the time didn’t even get a chance to buy presents. That was probably just as well, because 19 days later the marriage was over anyway.
#7 – Mario Lopez and Ali Landry – 18 days
You would think that after six years in a relationship, marriage is not a step taken lightly. You would also think that after such a long time you’d have figured out that your partner might be cheating on you. But no, Ali Landry married Mario Lopez and filed for divorce 18 days later after she did find strong evidence that he did indeed cheat on her.
#6 – Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds – 14 days
Granted, this particular wedding wasn’t even legally binding, but we include it anyway. Eddie and Tracey married in French Polynesia, though it was an unregistered wedding and thus not legal. This was followed by a honeymoon where the two were fighting non-stop (one issue was apparently Eddie’s insistence that Tracey take his name) and upon returning to the US they decided not to pursue a wedding there but remain friends instead. Yeah, right.
#5 – Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman – 9 days
This is another marriage that should never have taken place. Apparently Rodman was very drunk during the nuptials, which is why he wanted the marriage annulled after 8 or 9 days (sources differ), citing fraud and an unsound mind. Did Carmen have a similar excuse?
#4 – Robert Evans and Catherine Oxenberg – 9 days
What was she thinking? Catherine Oxenberg is gorgeous, so it’s pretty obvious what he was thinking, but why ever would she have married him? She was his sixth wife already and after her he married for a seventh time. Their marriage was annulled, but it’s not clear why.
#3 – Gregg Allman and Cher – 9 days
Apparently Cher was too much to handle for Gregg Allman and he couldn’t keep up with her. So after they were married in 1975, he quickly called it quits. Did he not know what kind of life she led? They had produced an album together before getting married. He can’t have been completely ignorant. Whilst they separated after only nine days, the divorce took four years to take place.
#2 – Jason Alexander and Britney Spears – 55 hours
The second most notorious quickie marriage and divorce (or annulment in this case) belongs to Britney Spears. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, right? So here it was that she married her childhood friend Jason Alexander, which she later admitted was a joke that had gone too far. The annulment followed suit, but her reputation never really recovered after that.
#1 – Rudolph Valentino and Jean Acker – 6 hours
This was a long time ago and is not widely known, but makes similar lists almost every time. After a very short courtship in 1919 of only two months, Rudolph Valentino and Jean Acker got married. It was Acker who had regrets almost immediately and infamously locked Valentino out of their hotel room. With the marriage never consummated, Valentino requested a divorce immediately. Funny enough, Valentino married again before this divorce was finalized (why it wasn’t annulled is a mystery) and he was sued for bigamy. Acker, by the way, spent the rest of her life with Chloe Carter.
