Michael Douglas has always been in the news for his romantic liaisons and affairs that have kept the public in a constant state of dizziness. But, people had hoped that he had mended his ways when he settled down with the stunning Catherine Zeta-Jones. So, everyone was taken back, when rumors regarding the two separating, started surfacing.

Can a leopard actually change his spots, is the question everyone wants to know!

Michael Douglas’ first serious relationship can be said to have been the husky voiced American actress of Italian origin, Brenda Vaccaro. They lived together for nearly six years from 1971 onwards before calling it a day. This Tony Award nominee and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress has had a tempestuous affair with the institution of marriage herself, with four marriages and four ex-husbands that include Martin Fried whom she had married before living with Michael; William Bishop, Charles Cannizzaro and  Guy Hector!

Almost immediately after breaking up with Brenda, at the mature age of 32 years, Michael Douglas jumped into his first marriage with the much younger 19 year old, Diandra Luker, in the March of 1977. Diandra was an Austrian diplomat’s daughter and they had a whirlwind six weeks of dating before they got engaged. The couple had their son, Cameron in 1978; Cameron has been in trouble with the authorities due to his drug related problems and is currently serving time in jail for drug possession. During this time Michael himself, was not only  rumoured to be having problems with alcohol abuse, but was also allegedly being unfaithful to his then wife, Diandra. Allegedly, she found him sleeping with her best friend, Ellen Mirojnick, a fashion consultant. In fact, Michael has recently admitted that they should have broken up sooner. It was in 1995 that Diandra filed for divorce and was given a hefty $45 million as alimony along with some prime property.

In 2000, Michael Douglas, now a much older man at 56 years, married the almost 25 years younger Welsh beauty Catherine Zeta-Jones, an A-level Hollywood actress in her own right. The couple has two children, son Dylan Michael and daughter Carys Zeta. The couple renewed their vows to each other, in 2010, after Michael’s successful recovery from a Stage Four Throat Cancer.

But, in 2013 a series of events happened that probably led to the couple’s separation and which stunned their fans. In an interview, Michael Douglas revealed that his cancer had probably come as a result of his coming into contact with the human papillomavirus (HPV); a virus that is transmitted through either oral or genital sex. Diandra was quick to deny that she had the infection, so the needle of suspicion swung to Catherine. Whether it was this public airing of intimate issues or not, but, soon Catherine moved out of their New York apartment. Their spokespersons only gave out a guarded statement stating that the Hollywood couple was taking some time off to evaluate and work on their marriage. Since, then both seem to have been working out through their issues and in November, there were reports that they were once again living together and were apparently reconciled.

The gorgeous Catherine has had her share of previous romantic relationships including television presenter John Leslie for two years from 1991. They split because she wanted to have a family and he didn’t. The still single John carries a torch for her till this day. Catherine then moved on to actor Angus McFadyen, 34, but their two-year relationship ended soon after their engagement. She was soon to be rumored to be in a relationship with the much married TV star Paul McGann, who allegedly chose his family over her. After arriving in Hollywood, she got involved with Mick Hucknall, the lead singer of the music band Simply Red for around four months, but quit because of the beginnings of her soon to be flourishing career. Then, it was multi-millionaire Hollywood producer Jon Peters, 56, who became her romantic interest, but wasn’t deemed suitable as a husband.

Through a span of many years, Michael Douglas has actively pursued a series of young and not-so-young beautiful women with a vengeance that is almost legendary! Among the many who supposedly figure in his overlong list of amours include Jenny Stratchan, a Brit model who was a mere 16 years old when they first met in a nightclub. Their torrid affair ran its course and by the 80s they were almost through with each other.

1983 was the turn of American actress Kathleen Turner who got involved with him during the shooting of their film Romancing The Stone, when Michael and Diandra were separated. They amicably stopped the affair, when Diandra wanted reconciliation with Michael.

Michael Douglas also figures in the list of men who have dated Sabrina Guiness, the leggy and beautiful Brewery heiress often referred to as ‘Goldilocks’. But, this independent girl moved on to fresher pastures and is still remembered as the girl who almost married Prince Charles, but allegedly lost out because of her colorful past love life.

In 1992, it was rumored that Michael Douglas had an affair with American actress Sharon Stone during the shooting of their film Basic Instinct.

Another model, this time supermodel Cindy Crawford moved into his orbit, for a brief spell in 1995 and Restaurant in Malibu. 1996 was when  White House press aide Lisa Caputo  came into his life during the time he was researching for his role in the film The American President. Lisa even quit her job when she got involved with him, but it obviously was all in vain.

His other brief relationships include a brief spell with Maureen Dowd, a New York Times columnist, New York television newswoman Elizabeth Vargas and the young former EastEnders star Martine McCutcheon, though the rumor was refuted by her.
