James McAvoy’s separation from Anne-Marie Duff surprised everyone but the two of them

James McAvoy and Anne-Marie Duff were married for 9 years, but together for more than 12. They have one son together and recently announced their separation, whilst still living together.

Actors James McAvoy and Anne-Marie Duff met on the British TV show Shameless. That was in 2004. And despite their age difference – Anne-Marie is older by nine years – the two hit it off and became an item. By 2006 they were engaged and in October that year they married.

In 2010, then, the couple became parents for the first time.

Everyone always considered James and Anne-Marie a perfect couple. They loved each other, knew how to have fun together, were equally humble, dedicated and professional (according to their fellow actors), and they preferred to keep out of the limelight to enjoy their private lives together. And those who knew them as a couple and/or have worked with them were always full of praise for the two.

Yet, somehow the bliss didn’t last. Bliss rarely lasts and it’s even more difficult when a certain amount of fame is introduced. James’ star has been steadily rising over the past decade. In the last five years alone he has starred in several blockbusters. No doubt his work takes him away from home more often than not these days.

James usually credits Anne-Marie for getting him where he is and always praises his wife when opportunity arises. Though the two don’t speak much of each other, nor do they show up on the red carpet together very often. Home is home and work is work.

But perhaps this strict separation didn’t work out. Anne-Marie was never short of work as an actor, but she mostly works in the UK. James, however, has been working a lot in the States. How is a couple to keep a home life, when their lives are separated like this?

When the two announced in May that they decided to divorce, they confirmed that they remained friends and that they continued to be committed parents to their son. They also continued to live together in the London home.

Fans were shocked, but it soon emerged that the couple had been separated for quite some time. On the set of X-Men: Apocalypse, James had apparently been considered to be single; his marriage was known to be broken.

Whilst promoting his new movie on British TV, some viewers commented on his chemistry with co-star Jennifer Lawrence, whilst elsewhere he has been said to have become close to his other co-star Alexandra Shipp, who played young Storm in the X-Men movie.

There is, however, currently no indication that James is dating anyone. He and his wife are obviously still friends and they do continue to live together, mostly for the benefit of their son. It’s an arrangement that will come to an end eventually, but as long as James and Anne-Marie get along, they can do whatever they want. They’ve chosen to go down a pretty healthy path, which is something that can’t be said for many estranged couples.

Of course, recent images of James and Anne-Marie or even James alone have described them as looking tense or him looking forlorn. But one might be excused for looking tense when paparazzi are taking pictures of a private conversation. And who knew what was on James’ mind when he was said to look forlorn.

For now it seems the gossip rags need to seek their fodder elsewhere, because James and Anne-Marie are unlikely candidates for providing them with anything juicy.
