Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood have known each other for many years. They met when they were each married to other people. For Garth that was his first wife Sandy Mahl. The two were college sweethearts and married in 1986.
They had three daughters, whilst Garth built one of country music’s most successful careers. We don’t know very much about their marriage, but the couple separated in 1999. Garth had previously hinted that not all was well in his marriage and there was no longer any happiness in the relationship. Curiously he mentioned that one had to re-examine one’s relationship, if there was no longer respect for one’s partner.
And if that respect could not be restored, then perhaps one was better off as friends.
Whilst mutual respect is certainly an aspect in a romantic relationship, there is more to it than that. Clearly, whatever was left between Sandy and Garth was not enough to salvage the marriage. So they separated and in 2000 they filed for divorce, which was finalized by the end of 2001.
Trisha Yearwood went through her second divorce in 1999. That means that by the time Garth was free to date again, the two started seeing each other pretty much right away.
Garth admitted that he had felt as if he had just met his wife when he first met Trisha. At the time he had only been married to Sandy for 13 months.
Apparently the feeling was mutual. Both of Trisha’s marriages were comparatively short-lived and her marriage of ten years to Garth is certainly her longest. It will hopefully also be her last one.
The two married in 2005 at their home in Oklahoma. It’s interesting to note that they lived in Oklahoma. Whilst both have their work in Nashville, they moved to Oklahoma after Garth’s divorce, because his ex-wife had moved there with their three daughters. Garth wanted to be close to his girls and made a deal with Trisha that they could move back to Tennessee once all girls were done with high school.
Since Trisha loved the girls as if they were her own, she agreed.
Garth is a man of his word, though, and in 2014, when his youngest daughter was about to graduate from high school, he put their home in Oklahoma on the market. He also retired from his tour retirement. With his daughters now needing him around much less, he decided to go on tour once more, which he had retired from around the time of his divorce.
Trisha has accompanied him as much as possible and occasionally shared the stage with him. The two are considered country music’s biggest power couple and given that quite a few country music couples split up last year, everyone is looking to them and their stable relationship.
Trisha divulged that their success is in supporting each other and also in compromising. It seems they can both be there for each other without their egos getting in the way. As long as that remains the case, the two will grow old together without many issues.
Looking at their history, one is inclined to believe that they were always meant to end up together anyway, but perhaps they wouldn’t be as successful in their marriage now, if they hadn’t been able to fail in their previous marriages.
