The Patridge Family star, David Cassidy and his wife Sue, are now facing a particularly messy and very public divorce after almost 23 years of marriage. David’s estranged wife, Sue filed for divorce in February this year shortly after her husband was arrested for driving under influence for the third time in three years. However, she declined to comment whether her husband’s drinking problems were responsible for their marital troubles.
Evidently, their marriage had been headed downhill for several months before Sue finally filed for divorce. In fact, they had been staying separately since November last year according to TMZ. They have even slashed the price of their lavish Fort Lauderdale estate in Florida $500,000 to $3.9 million to expedite their divorce proceedings and come to a settlement. The couple had initially listed their Florida mansion at $4.5 million when they put it up for sale last August according to sources. Unfortunately, they have failed to attract any potential buyers as a consequence of which Sue has a filed a petition for partition to force the Court to take the property off their hands and sell it as soon as possible.
Unlike her estranged husband, David, Sue was fairly open to tabloid reporters about their marriage’s breakdown. Speaking about their divorce, Sue admitted to reporters that – “This has been looming for some time. I am truly heartbroken our marriage is ending.”
David, on the other hand, declined to make any comment to the media in person about his divorce. Instead, his spokesperson released a statement stating that opting for the divorce was Sue’s decision. In his statement to MailOnline, he said that – “It is very sad that Sue chose to take this approach. I have tried to resolve this amicably outside of the public eye. I have reached out to her with no response over the last 3 months. It’s a sad day for me and for our son Beau.”
At this point, it’s an unconfirmed rumor that David’s drinking problems led to their divorce. The 63 year old star might even be facing jail time of up to 96 as a consequence of his prior drunk driving convictions. David’s manager was quick to defend him and claimed that David’s drinking problems were caused over the disputed Patridge Family profits. Apparently, David had been quarreling with Sony Pictures’ lawyers for months on end about his share of the profits from the hit TV series which had eventually led to his relapse.
