Avril Lavigne married for the first time in 2006. She had been dating Deryck Whibley since she had been 19 and was engaged to him in 2005. Avril was quite proud of her marriage and her husband, whom she claimed to be keeping off drugs.
But by 2009 the marriage was over and the divorce was announced. It was Avril who ended up filing and the divorce was finalized by 2010. Despite the untimely end of their union, Avril and Deryck remained on friendly terms and Avril has been known to show her support for her ex-husband. Incidentally Deryck remarried last year not long before she announced her second divorce.
Avril had known Chad Kroeger since they collaborated on one of her albums in 2012. According to her he told her pretty soon that he would marry her and she simply said she knew. They were engaged within a month of dating each other, but they had the good sense to wait until July 2013 to get married.
Unfortunately it only took until 2014 for the first divorce rumours to make the rounds. Apparently both Avril and Chad had repeatedly been seen without their wedding rings and without each other. That prompted the rumour mill into action and it was speculated that their marriage might already be over after less than a year.
Chad laughed the rumours off and Avril also denied that anything was wrong.
But when Avril announced in September 2015 that she and Chad were indeed separating, many people said that it had been a long time coming. Nobody seemed to care that Avril also said that she and Chad would remain the best of friends. Instead the rumour mill sprang into gear once more and it was claimed that the marriage had largely been without love or attraction. Apparently Avril had never really been attracted to Chad, she simply appreciated his artistic talent.
That begs the question why anyone would want to marry anyone when they’re not attracted to them? It is a rather profound part of making a relationship successful, though other factors are no less important, perhaps even more. Appreciating someone’s artistic talent doesn’t mean you have to marry them. A friendship should do just nicely, if one wants any sort of relationship.
And, of course, it would be naive to think that there are plenty of marriages currently in progress where partners are indeed not attracted to each other physically.
On the other hand it has been claimed that Chad couldn’t keep up with Avril any longer. His career was nearing its end whilst she was working on reinventing herself.
Given how friendly Avril and Chad are with each other, those rumours don’t seem to be very believable. The only thing that does give us pause is the fact that it was Avril’s mother who moved in with her to look after her when Avril was diagnosed with Lyme disease and that Chad did not celebrate Avril’s 30th birthday with her.
It seems the two were indeed no longer a couple for some time.
As far as we know neither of them have actually filed for divorce yet. But the two have frequently been seen together and they’ve also collaborated together again. Judging from comments both of them have made, they are indeed only friends, however. And even when pictured together they don’t seem to be more than that.
And honestly, it’s better this way. Friendly exes are definitely preferable to those estranged couples who only haul insults and accusations at one another.
We do hope, though, that Avril will either not get married again or that the next one will be her last one. Her current track record isn’t the best. But at least she’s always on good terms with her exes. Perhaps that’s a Canadian thing, too.
