When Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai first met in 1997 they both instantly knew that there was something between them. But they didn’t start dating for quite some time.
Abhishek said at some point that he made sure to court Ash through gestures, words and his emotions and not by whistling after her. In other words it sounds like a rather respectful way to go after the woman who would become his wife.
The two were married ten years after they first met. No matter how long their courtship was, it’s pretty clear that the marriage was not a step taken lightly.
In 2011 they welcomed their daughter into this world and there’s very little doubt that they have been a picture perfect family ever since. The two have spoken about their marriage before and they seem very happy together.
Yet it appears to be a curse of celebrity couples everywhere to fall victim to divorce rumours. Early last year the talk of a divorce between the two hit the media outlets and particularly the blogosphere. Among other things Aishwarya’s failure to show up on time to the Cannes festival was cited as a reason that not all was well between the couple. But nobody noticed that she simply missed her flight due to an air controller strike in France and later made it.
And then, of course, Ash took their daughter to a French Riviera holiday without Abhishek and once again rumours were rife. But once again there was a perfectly legitimate reason behind it: Abhishek was busy shooting on his new movie Happy New Year. Usually production schedules don’t have very much room for a family holiday.
So, whilst those rumours made the rounds and nobody wanted to check their facts on the details, Abhishek eventually decided to send out a tweet to put any divorce allegations to rest once and for all. And it was a classy one: “Ok…. so I believe I’m getting divorced. Thanks for letting me know! Will you let me know when I’m getting remarried too? Thanks. #muppets”
And nobody has spoken of divorce since.
On the 20th April, a year after those rumours, the two celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary and thankfully this time nobody dared to even mention the d-word.
